Fantastic piece of kit - easily worth the price, 2010-03-15 I bought one of these for my wife: we've just bought a house and the previous owners had let the garden run away out of control. She decided to take on the garden whilst I got on with demolishing walls and ceilings but quickly found the task of sawing up cleared shrubs and trees too much for the manual handsaw, pruners and loppers. I suggested a petrol chainsaw, but as is the case with many people, the prospect was too intimidating. (Being a typical bloke, I would of course have cheerfully ordered the biggest chainsaw on the market and then probably have killed myself with it). Then I noticed Amazon's recommendation of the Alligator, and you can see how safe it is just from looking at the picture. Both hands have to be on the handles or it won't work, and the chain is enclosed, so it's much easier and safer to use than a chainsaw. Reluctantly, my wife agreed that I should get one.
In operation, I would agree with everything the other reviewers have said. I have used it a couple of times; it took a 15 foot laurel down in a couple of minutes and is so well balanced that it always feels manageable and safe.
The only down side is that, rather unexpectedly, my wife has come over all proprietorial about the thing; apparently it has a "cute face", so wheras other items of garden equipment are known as "the wheelbarrow", or "the spade", this one has a name. He's now called "Jaws", gets very carefully oiled and properly maintained and together they systematically reduce bushes and branches to neat piles of logs. However I'm no longer allowed to use him.
Despite that, I would have no hesitation in recommending this product; most gardeners would be glad to have one.
alligator chain saw, 2010-07-11 I heartily recommend this item if you need to lop tree branches or small whole trees. I originally purchased an ordinary chain saw but was "ordered" by my family to return it. At 78 they thought I should'nt be let loose with it! It works very well and is safer than the ordinary chain.
Brilliant, 2010-04-24 I have had a ball, cut down everything in sight, this is great, I would say though that you need an extra battery, it is so good you do not want to stop whan the battery runs out!! It is very easy to use I am only 5 foot 3 and a small build and I have no problems.
Takes the hard work out of cutting wood, 2010-05-18 I have been very impressed by this tool. I have just spent several afternoons clearing an overgrown garden and clearing low branches off trees and the Alligator has easily doubled the amount of work that I could have done the old-fashioned way (handsaw, loppers and lots of elbow-grease). It goes through very thick brambles, thicker sticks and occasional sturdy branches up to the maximum width of the jaws (about 5 inches) like a hot knife through butter. You will probably need two batteries as the supplied charger takes ~ 6 hours to charge them - after emptying two batteries you should have a good heap of cut wood to show for your efforts. You need to read the instructions quite carefully as they aren't particularly well laid out - if the chain jams after cutting lots of green twigs there is a cover that you can unscrew to get access in order to clear the jam - (it has only happened once, but it took me a while to figure out that I had missed this on a quick read-through of the manual).
safer than a chain saw, 2010-02-19 for those small branches the alligator saw is brilliant, does in seconds what would normally take minutes, can cope with branches upto and around the thickness of an arm like a knife through butter, so easy to use and more importantly, safe
