Easy to use Tom Tom, 2010-06-22 Used this Tom Tom for the first time yesterday. It was easy to find my destination, alerted me to speed restrictions and gave an accurate indication of the duration of the journey. So far working well. The test will be using it in Europe for the first time this summer.
TOM TOM XL IQ, 2010-07-22 A very nice piece of kit especialy the advanced lane warnings, unfortunatly its not that ideal for directing large vehicles as you can finish up in somebodys housing estate, for this reason perhaps it would be a good idea if it was possible to turn off the IQ routes when not required?
did they deliberately make it worse than older versions?, 2010-07-01 I recommend you avoid this - it gets a two as it does broadly work, just not nearly as well as the 5-year-old model it replaced. I was using a borrowed tom tom 520. Liked it very much, easy to use, it worked. Then the battery ran down and the unit is unfixable! all data gone, won't even boot. So I have to buy a new one for my uncle and also one for me.
I bought this as a replacement, with some qualms because of my experience with the 520 and the awful reviews online of tomtom service and reliability (it seems that, as I found, one minor issue and you have to throw the unit away - not good if you are paying around £200).
This is far worse to use than the older model.
- I found the old one clearer to read, with its bigger screen.
- it doesn't say street names or directions like the 520, just "turn left" or "turn right" - sometimes with very little notice. It had me going the wrong way on a motorway which cost me over an hour's driving (because it said "take a left turn" rather than "take the M11 going North" - and the roundabout was such that I took too early a left turn and went south). Not knowing street names or main road orientation doesn't often matter, but sometimes it is vital.
- it doesn't say to turn round when you go wrong. So it will have you drive several miles to go three right turns rather than telling you you have gone wrong (or that the dead end private drive to a derelict house counts as a road so what you thought was the third exit on the roundabout was in fact the fourth). This took me on a pleasant detour through devon country lanes, which was nice but made me late. I could have turned round in several places had I realised I had gone wrong, but it just did the "right" "right" right" thing til I was back on the road I had left some time earlier, after about 4 miles.
- Now the USB charger makes me swear every time I plug it in (stupid right-angled cable connector).
- The signal drops out frequently and often it is 5-10 mins before it knows where I am. Have learned either to switch on early if possible so it gets a signal before I am driving, or to check on google what the first few miles of the route are - not always very practical. The old model picked up a signal both in my house and in my office so if I switched on and set destination as I was walking out of the house the device would be ready to use once I was at the wheel: there was no appreciable delay finding a satellite.
- alerts for cameras and speed limits are less user-friendly
I haven't dared update the map because of what happened to the old tomtom and the many review comments about losing all data doing this, as happened with the 520.
It was touch and go whether I would get another tom tom having had one fail catastrophically after merely running out of charge. I risked it because I had enjoyed using the 520. I don't enjoy this as much. It feels as if they have reduced features in order to charge more for a fancier model. Shan't go with tomtom again.
I started this as a three star and then realised I am pretty fed up so it gets two. I just wish I could fix the 520.
Turn around when possible, 2010-07-25 Utter rubbish, slow to start up, slow to find signal, frequently gets the route wrong, doesn't recognise long established roads or one way streets, cable difficult to connect, window bracket poor design. The worst part is trying to update the maps, the process takes several hours, frequently crashes and wipes out all your stored favourites. The internal memory is 2gb and the latest Europe map is 2.3gb - way to go TomTom. The message you keep hearing when it frequently loses the route is "turn around when possible" this is what you should do in the shop and go and buy a garmin! Please don't buy this piece of total garbage.
This is a review of TomTom Customer Services!, 2010-09-05 I already have a TomTom satellite navigation system and use it regularly. I rate this as a 5 Star product. I shall soon be travelling extensively throughout Europe by road and recently saw an opportunity to purchase a spare unit quite cheaply at a sale. Although an older model, the unit was still boxed, absolutely complete and appeared to be unused. It would not, however, switch on but, thinking it needed nothing more than charging, I took a chance and bought it.
I tried everything (As did my local store) but the unit simply would not switch on. Eventually, I contacted TomTom Customer Services and told them how the I had obtained the unit and that it was "NOT" under guarantee. Their service was exceptional. Firstly, they sent me a small package containing a cardboard box which, when assembled, fitted my TomTom unit perfectly and would clearly protect the unit whilst in the post. Secondly, the package also contained a Royal Mail "Special Delivery" envelope complete with address and tracking number. Postage and insurance were already paid by TomTom.
Within 24 hours of my posting the unit back to TomTom I received an email confirming receipt and within 7 days I got another unit back. TomTom had REPLACED my unit free of charge with a brand new and exactly the same model and ALL under guarantee!
So for those of you who are contemplating purchasing a TomTom satellite navigation system, I thought you might like to know about this company's follow-up customer services system. They are quite excellent and I hope this message is useful.
